Title: Celebrating a Milestone: Reaching Our Financial Goal as a First-Generation Immigrant Family
Body:
Today, I’m marking a personal milestone and sharing it with you in this space, since there isn’t much opportunity for real-life celebrations beyond my husband. We’re a married couple with two kids, 31 and 39 years old, living in a high-cost-of-living area. We are proud first-generation immigrants who moved to the United States in our 20s to pursue education and built our lives from the ground up.
Seven years of steady effort have brought us to a financial goal I set for myself: a net worth target of $5 million. While some may consider this “low-end” for financial independence, this number represents security and self-reliance for us. As first-generation immigrants, we understand deeply the importance of being prepared and having no fallback beyond our own hard work.
I wanted to pause and celebrate this achievement, recognizing how far we’ve come and how grateful I am for everything in our lives. The supportive messages we’ve received from the community have made this birthday feel truly special, and I’m grateful for every kind word.
A few details about our journey:
– Our finances are very much a joint effort; we operate as a 50/50 partnership. When we first met, my husband hadn’t accumulated much of a personal net worth, for a variety of reasons. Since then, we’ve built our path together.
– Our investment strategy is balanced, with roughly half allocated to rental property ventures and the other half to diversified index funds. Over the years, this approach has contributed solid growth and stability to our financial plan.
Thank you to everyone who has shared encouragement and interest in our story. Your comments and goodwill have added a meaningful layer to this birthday milestone.
If you’re curious about our approach or want to discuss similar journeys, I’m happy to share more details about how we’ve balanced real estate investments with passive index fund growth, and how we’ve stayed motivated over seven years of diligent planning.
